It’s one thing to make use of technology promoting a product or strengthening a brand; it’s quite another to use QR Code technology and save the world at the same time. Well….it’s close. Whenever you purchase something, don’t you feel that it’s a waste to just throw the box away but because of space constraints, you throw it away, anyway or you keep it in storage to see if you can put it to good use later?

http://www.aboxlife.com/ is a very unique (and new) concept recently introduced and they use QR Codes in a very special way – to track the journey and life of a box! Yes, a box.

Some customers who shopped at Columbia Sportswear Company noticed that when they make their way to the checkout counter, they’re being told that they can use either conventional NEW boxes or have the purchases shipped to their home in a used box. Using a used box that is still in good condition is very meaningful so, more than 60% of their customers thought it was meaningful too.

The company intends to reduce the need and demand for new cardboard boxes to help impact the world in a different way. They will continue to increase efforts to minimize packaging waste in their system. The concept of A Box Life is to engage their customers to reduce wastage, reuse reusable items and recycle for the betterment of our environment.

With each reused box, there is a sticker with a QR Code printed on it. The customer will then scan the QR Code with their cell phones and be led to a website where they can track the journey and ‘life’ of the box that they have in their homes today. For those without a QR Code-enabled phone, there’s a tracking number. Type that number into that box and you’ll see where the box has been. It’s an incredibly unique concept.

In fact, when you’re in the website, you can share your story (go to the website and see a picture of a baby in one of the boxes) or even post pictures of the box in action…right there in your home. Come to think of it, it’s almost like tracking down the journey of a wandering traveler on a quest to save the world.
