The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Today's QR Code Technology

advantages-disadvantagesAs with everything else in life, there is a flip side to a story. QR Codes, although said to be one of the best things to happen to the internet-savvy society in today's world, has its disadvantages but we are only regarding it in the light of modern society's acceptance at this present moment.

The popularity of QR Code is growing rapidly all around the world and we are seeing more cell phone users switch from the conventional cell phone to a smart phone, like Blackberry and iPhone, two of the major market leaders in the cell phone market today.

One of the advantages of using QR Code is that it can read almost anything as long as it is online, it's readable. The cell phone's camera and sensor has got more use now; instead of merely capturing moments in time, it is the link to an online world with the help of a QR Code reader. In order to 'read' a QR Code, the cell phone needs a QR Code reader. If your phone does not come equipped with that, finding it, downloading and installing it will only take moments.

Another advantage of using the QR Code is that the scanner (camera) does not have to be lined-up in a specific manner in order to read a barcode. Some people have the misconception of thinking that one has to line up the scanner PERFECTLY to the QR Code in order to read it. That is incorrect. Although the user's hand needs to be stable (not shaking in every other direction), a good QR Code reader comes with the ability to sharpen up and correct a 'shaky' scanned QR Code and read it, anyway. And besides, most camera phones on modern cell phones are very advanced.

Other advantages include information being made to you regardless of where you are. Education, advertisement, savings for companies focused on branding their products or services, and much, much more.

A disadvantage for the QR Code fad is that smart phones are far more expensive compared to the conventional phone. It is a form of investment for internet-savvy people but for those who are 40 years old and above, there is absolutely no need to waste such money on technology. But with that said, the market is very competitive and the competitiveness is bringing the price down.

Suffice to say, we, at www.beqrious.com thinks that there are far more advantages to using QR Codes than there are disadvantage. Care to share your point with us in the comment section of this blog post?

I do not see any real disadvantages with QR codes. I love them! What I don't understand is your comment, "It is a form of investment for internet-savvy people but for those who are 40 years old and above, there is absolutely no need to waste such money on technology." Huh? I am 50-something and I don't know why you would say that. Is it that you assume that 40-plus-ers do not/would not be interested or able to use the technology? Someday, if you are lucky enough and smart enough, you will see the image of an older person staring right into your eyes. That person will be your mirror reflection. And trust me, your brain will not have fallen out or decayed and you will not have lost any of your inherent talents, inquisitiveness, ingenuity, or personality. Imagine your shock when, sometime after that day, a person with a mere 50% of the amount of life experience that you have, will assume you are unwilling or unable to take advantage of a simple and exciting bit of new technology. I imagine that on that day, you may be the one writing a comment to a blog like this one. Linda

@Linda: You are so right! Absolutely. @author: I am not 50! Not even 40+ but as a user experience designer I cannot and will not assume that a target audience of 50+ are not doing this or are not capable of using that ... user research would reveal the real situation which needs to be taken into consideration. We are constantly wrong with our assumptions on pre teen kids and the famous 50+ age groups. That be said in terms of designing a the user experience for products. As the person "Peter" I see that people aged 50+ are at their peak of knowlwedge, experience, and scocial intelligence. Scientific research is discovering that the mental capacity of the 50+ people is enormous. The human brain gathers information in the order of peta to exabytes. Most CEOs leading the most powerful companies around the world are in that age group. I many of those lead "technology driven" companies. As I mentioned before, we are assuming too much and doing less research than we ought to. We will find out more than we thought was true. Peter
